With less than a week to go until its official reveal, McLaren has shown off another innovative bit of its upcoming 650S replacement.
Along with some fairly raunchy performance credentials, the 650S successor – likely to be called the 720S – will feature a nifty, all-digital and foldable instrument cluster.
Unimaginatively, it’s called the Folding Driver Display and there are essentially two settings – Full Display mode is active most of the time, displaying pertinent data on the screen in front of you, depending on which drive mode you’ve selected. There are three of those, by the way, including Comfort, Sport and Track.
Then there’s Slim Display mode. This is where things get interesting – in this setting, the gauge cluster folds down and slides into the dashboard, while a little strip at the edge peeks through and displays only necessary information such as speed, RPM and the selected gear. When it’s time to go fast and party, this effectively de-clutters the driver’s view ahead and minimizes distractions.
We’ll bring you full details of McLaren’s next supercar when the Geneva Motor Show kicks off in exactly one week. In the meantime, check out how it works!
