Yesterday, we told you about Mazda’s all-new CX-5 and its nifty diesel engine. Well, that diesel engine is finally coming to North America.
Power numbers haven’t been announced yet, but the 2.2-litre SkyActiv-D engine, as it’s known, will be available in the 2017 CX-5 from the second half of next year. Currently, Mazda offers its 2.2-litre turbodiesel for the Mazda6 in international markets, pumping out 173 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque.
The 2.2-litre SkyActiv turbodiesel has been in the works for the North American market for a few years, but now meets U.S. emissions standards. Mazda also says the diesel CX-5 will come with two nifty features – Natural Sound Smoother and Natural Sound Frequency Control – aimed at reducing the gruff noises typically associated with diesels.
We’ll have more details on pricing and full specs – including horsepower, torque and fuel economy – closer to the CX-5 diesel’s launch. The new oil-burner joins the 2018 Chevy Equinox as one of the only two diesels in the mainstream compact CUV segment.
