What is it? Subaru picked the Geneva Motor Show to reveal an addition to its engine line-up. The 2.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-four Boxer engine is now mated to a 16.5 horsepower electric motor incorporated into the CVT. It helps to boost performance and improve fuel economy, and the only compromise is the slight reduction in cargo capacity, as the battery sits in the trunk.
Why does it matter? The powertrain produces a combined output of 147 horsepower and 143 lb.-ft. of torque, and feeds it to all four wheels. At moderate speed, the engine and electric motor work together to improve efficiency. At higher speeds, the engine drives the car and can charge the battery. When the battery is fully charged, the electric motor can power the vehicle for very short distances, notably when pulling away.

Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer
When is it coming? No word on when it comes to Canada, but with electrification becoming an important part of any manufacturer’s portfolio, the e-Boxer powertrains seem like a shoe-in for the Forester and Crosstrek.
Should you buy it? This is hardly earth-shattering news, but with fuel efficiency becoming an increasingly important factor, anything that drives the numbers in the right direction is good news.
