Nissan Xmotion concept packs suicide doors and boxy style

What is it? The Xmotion, pronounced “cross motion,” concept is a six-passenger – or more accurately a 4+2 – three-row concept that’s said to hint at the future of Nissan design in 2020 and beyond. It, says Nissan, “blends Japanese culture and craftsmanship with American-style utility.” That may be so, but to many show-goers it had the look only a mother can love.

Why does it matter? Swing the front and rear suicide-style doors open and there sits a slick interior that speaks to the future of interior design. There are a total of seven digital screens. Three main central displays with two lesser digital end caps span the entire width of the floating dashboard. There’s a digital room mirror (similar to the convex conversation mirrors) in the ceiling and another display on the centre console. The infotainment system and array of displays are controlled through hand gestures, eye movements and an advanced voice recognition system.

When is it coming? As a strict design exercise, the Xmotion is destined to remain a concept.

Should you buy it? While the exterior styling proved to be polarizing, the cabin takes a serious look at the day when tradition knobs and dials will make way for a smartphone like environment. It is an interesting take on where the cabin is heading.
