A new ‘Bullitt’ Ford Mustang will break cover in Detroit

Ford will pull the covers off of a special edition “Bullitt” Mustang at the Detroit auto show next week, a pony car patterned after the iconic chase vehicle from the movie of the same name.

The high-performance GT car will be a 2018 model year car, so that its release will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Bullitt movie starring Steve McQueen (and a famous chase involving a Highland Green ’68 Mustang GT 390 fastback and a black ’68 Dodge Charger), sources told Automotive News.

Ford is saying next to nothing about what was supposed to be a surprise reveal, but if we had to guess the car will similarly come in a nice dark Highland Green and, like the movie car, sport dark gray five-spoke wheels with a chrome lip around the rim. We’d assume the production run will be limited.

Commemorative “Bullitt” Mustangs first hit Ford dealerships in 2001, and then again in 2008 and 2009. The car chase in the Academy Award-winning detective-thriller movie is arguably one of the most famous in cinematic history, and lasts nine minutes.

More proof Ford’s aiming to surprise showgoers with a Bullitt include reports of a dark green Mustang caught filming a commercial late last year; and an auction site listing that cropped up recently advertising the January 19th sale of a “special new Ford Mustang” benefiting the Boy’s Republic school in California—McQueen’s alma mater.
