What is it?
The Rio 5 is at the bottom of Kia’s model range, but that doesn’t mean the company has skimped on the level of standard features. The Rio 5 is Kia’s best-selling car, and for 2018 the five-door hatchback gets a generational upgrade that brings that level even higher, with some class-exclusive standard features, an injection of new technology, as well as an all-new design.
Why does it matter?
When Kia arrived in Canada in 1999, the company offered products at the bottom of the pricing range, with that low pricing reflecting the few available frills. Nineteen years later Kia has become known for offering high value, and although pricing now matches instead of undercutting the competition, what you get in a Kia is a level of standard and safety features that is above the norm. And, according to Kia Canada’s VP and COO, Ted Lancaster: “The all-new KIA Rio 5-door will be one of the safest cars in its class.”
The fourth-generation Rio 5 gets a resculpted profile, with a longer hood, more front overhang and less overhang at the rear. The wheelbase has grown by 10 millimetres to 2,580 mm, while it is 15 mm longer overall at 4,065 mm.

These increased exterior dimensions have added some interior space, with 8.5 cm more rear legroom, and an increase of 68 litres in cargo capacity to 493 litres despite the 15-mm shorter rear overhang. Unique in the segment is the combination of a standard heated steering wheel, heated seats and a five-inch multimedia display with rear view camera.
Power will come from the same 130-hp, 1.6-litre four as the current generation, with a choice of either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2018 Kia Rio 5 will be the first car in the company’s lineup and the first in its segment to incorporate an embedded telematic system that will turn the car into a “fully connected device and will provide remote service, safety and security, and vehicle relationship management services.” The subscription to this available telematic system will be offered free of charge for the first five years.
When is it coming?
The 2018 Kia Rio 5 will arrive at dealers this summer, with pricing to be announced approaching its arrival.
Should you buy one?
Value has always been at the forefront for Kia, and the new Rio 5, with its new styling and new technology, should continue to deliver on this.
